Mount Hawthorn

2014 M.B.A. winner $300,000 to $400,000

Working with a 1930’s California Bungalow requires a certain kind of balance – respecting the existing architectural integrity and reinterpreting its defining features, while keeping a sense of seamlessness between the old and the new both inside and out.

Lightness is imbued to the front facade by rendering the face brickwork and painting the external walls a light shade of grey. Roof lines are modified to feature more period-correct timber battening, and painted roof tiles are replaced by Zincalume sheets which complement the chosen colour palette.

Internally, the existing front bedroom is converted into a master suite with walk-in wardrobe and en-suite bathroom. The kitchen and dining room are reconfigured into an additional bedroom, and the remaining space forms a central hallway that links the existing and the new.
